Dallas Smith Backs Mike de Jong as First Choice for BC Liberal Leader
BURNABY – North Island BC Liberal Candidate MLA Dallas Smith announced today that Mike de Jong is his first choice to be the new leader of the BC Liberals.
“For me, Mike de Jong has to be the first choice to lead our party. He’s ready to take the fight to John Horgan and the NDP. He’s committed to renew our party. And he’s going to rebuild trust with British Columbians so we can win the next election,” Smith said. “Mike de Jong is the only candidate ready to lead on the first day – and handle whatever is thrown at him.”
Smith is the president of the Nanwakolas Council, which represents six member bands on the North Island and the Coast. Smith and the Council were key partners in creating the historic agreement in 2016 to protect the Great Bear Rainforest, while still ensuring opportunities for economic development and jobs for local First Nations. Smith ran for the BC Liberals in the North Island riding in 2017 candidate.
“Mike knows every part of this province, and he knows how important it is that everyone participates in our economy. His work on completing successful treaties and economic development agreements with First Nations is a foundation for a better future for all British Columbians,” Smith said. “Mike’s always delivered – and as leader and Premier he is going to make sure our party and our province succeed.”
Mike de Jong now has many MLAs, former MLAs, MPs, and community leaders supporting him from around the province (see list below).
The BC Liberal party will hold a leadership convention to announce the new leader on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018.
