Rich Coleman is Making Mike de Jong His First Choice for BC Liberal Leader
BURNABY – Official Opposition Leader and Langley East MLA Rich Coleman is the latest BC Liberal to throw their support behind Mike de Jong as the next leader of the BC Liberals.
“I’ve worked side-by-side with Mike de Jong and I know he’s ready on the first day to make sure the NDP are answerable to the people of B.C., to start the hard work of renewing the BC Liberal Party, and get our team ready to fight and win the next election,” Coleman said. “Whenever Mike has said he’d do something, he delivered. That is the kind of commitment and leadership the BC Liberals need.”
Coleman led the BC Liberal Official Opposition through a successful fall session of the Legislature that held the NDP-Green government to account.
“Mike showed his leadership through the tough times of the fall session. As my House Leader he harnessed the entire BC Liberal team in the Legislature to make sure we kept the NDP’s feet to the fire,” Coleman said. “Mike’s track record makes him the best choice to continue to make sure we can grow our free-enterprise coalition – and to harness the benefits that flow from a strong economy to making life better for all British Columbians.”
Coleman, a six-term MLA, is the Leader of the Official Opposition and the former Deputy Premier of B.C. He has been a key cabinet minister and party stalwart in every BC Liberal government. He and de Jong were sitting MLAs that helped build the BC Liberals win a majority government in 2001. Coleman served as Minister of Energy and Mines, Minister of Natural Gas Development and Minister Responsible for Housing, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, Minister of Housing and Social Development, and Minister of Forests and Range.
“I am thankful for Rich’s friendship and his decision today to support me as the first choice as BC Liberal’s next leader,” says de Jong. “Rich has dedicated more than two decades in public life to make B.C. the economic envy of the rest of Canada, and he wants to make sure the BC Liberals are ready now to stop the NDP-Green government from eroding the prosperity we worked so hard to build.”
Michael de Jong now has many MLAs, former MLAs, MPs, and community leaders supporting him from around the province (see list below).
The BC Liberal party will hold a leadership convention to announce the new leader on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018.
